The Importances of the Patron

Many look upon the sole reason for the patron as one of financial support. While that’s certainly an important aspect of their role, it’s not the only one—not from the perspective of this artist, anyway.

Initially, that’s how I saw the potential for seeking out patrons. I’d hoped to supplement my income so I could spend less time chasing money and more time creating. I imagine that’s how many creators approach the concept.

As time has gone on, however, I’ve found my patrons (here and elsewhere) add so much more to my creative life than funds ever could. Not saying I don’t appreciate their contributions, because I do, so much, but that I’ve received so much more than that from them.

The people who support my work monetarily, also support me creatively, emotionally and, dare I say, spiritually.

I’ve had the opportunity of late to spend face-to-face time with people who are patrons of my work. Obviously, they’re also ardent fans. What a special experience! To learn how my books have affected them, to hear their perspectives on my work, really touched me.

As a writer, I tend to disappear into the fictional world I’ve created, getting lost in the process of… well, entertaining myself. I often feel as if it’s my private world, which can be a lonely existence sometimes. To learn that my fictional world has affected other people is thrilling on so many levels. To hear it in their voices, to see it in their faces… ah, quite the unexpected bonus.

Thank you all for your patronage. Seriously, from the bottom of my heart.
