Listeners’ Resources

Listeners Resources

On this page are links for the various resources I’ve cited and will cite on my podcast, The Djuna Shellam Podcast, as well as particular topics.

To simplify the information, I will use Wikipedia as a source. Please keep in mind Wikipedia has been known as an extremely biased and oft-cited unreliable source depending on the subject. That said, I suggest you consider it a starting point only, and not the end-all, be-all for facts.

Keep checking the page. As I mention resources in subsequent episodes and add topics or make specific references, I’ll add them to the list. They’re not in any specific order (yet), alphabetical or otherwise.

Resources

  • Google Alerts: I use this invaluable service to keep track of my book titles. It’s how I make sure no one is misusing my intellectual property in any way, which includes stealing.
  • Draft2Digital: This is the company I use to publish my digital books. I have plans in the not-too-distant future to also publish my paperback editions with D2D.
  • The Hayes Code: I mention this in a yet-to-be-released episode where I talk about… sex in books and other entertainment media.
  • Literature & Latte: The is the company of Scrivener, the fantastic writing program I use for writing my novels, and Scapple. Scapple is the organization program I use to visualize how my characters are “related.”
  • ProWriting Aid: This is a program I’ve used for my last two novels. It’s been instrumental in improving my editing process and my writing, in general.
  • Eleanor Alice Burford (aka Victoria Holt): One of my all-time favorite authors—Victoria Holt.
  • Armistead Maupin: Writer of the Tales of The City series, my all-time favorite series.
  • Djuna Barnes: This is my namesake and the woman thought to be the first female writer of a classic American novel—Nightwood.
  • Bowker: This is the company I use for my ISBN (International Standard Book Number) numbers.
  • Aeon Timeline: I use Aeon Timeline 2 to help me with… timelines. Because I go back and forth in time, this is an invaluable tool for me when things get complicated.
  • Tom Clancy: This is one of my favorite and most influential writers.
  • Anne Rice: Another favorite writer, in particular, The Mayfair Witches Trilogy (The Witching Hour, Lasher, and Taltos).
  • The Trixie Belden Mysteries: This is hands down the most influential book series of my childhood.
  • The Vogue Theatre: One of San Francisco’s oldest operating cinemas.
  • The U.S. Copyright Office: Everything you ever wanted to know about copyrighting your work is right here.
  • Google Map: This is an excellent tool for discovering remote locations. You can “walk” around a neighborhood and really get a feel for it—as much as you can virtually, anyway. But it’s far better than nothing.
  • Ron Adamson: Wonderful American artist.
  • BMW Motorcycles: A bit of history of the Bavarian Motorwerks
  • Bighorn Sheep: I also enjoy learning about new and unusual things (or people or animals) I run across.
  • The Idiot Plot: One thing you don’t want your readers to say to themselves, others, or, yes, even you is… that was stupid.
