My Namesake Djuna Barnes — Episode 24

In this week’s episode of The Djuna Shellam Podcast, I talk about my namesake Djuna Barnes. I also briefly mention a bit of what I’ve been up to since last week; and, of course, I touch on the weather.

In the podcast, I share how Djuna Barnes was partially the inspiration for my nom de plume; however, what I didn’t mention is that my nom de plume—first and last names—happens to be an anagram of my real name. I was thrilled that I could work it out that Djuna would be my nom de plume’s first name. Someday in the not-too-distant future, I’ll probably reveal my real identity to the world. In fact, I feel closer to doing so than ever before. Hmmm… stay tuned?

Djuna Barnes

My namesake Djuna Barnes was a colorful and important figure of the early 20th century with a fascinating history. In my opinion, she has not given near the credit or attention she deserves in American history. Some would say she has gotten what she is due because she produced only a small amount of fiction, and became reclusive fairly early in her life. Or, because of her unconventional life, she should be minimized. Naturally, I must respectfully disagree.

Did you know… Nightwood, an American classic novel, is thought to be the first classic penned by a woman? Imagine that!

Simply searching Djuna Barnes will bring much information about her. This link, in particular, is an example of her history.

There is so much interesting history from the early 20th century in regard to artists and writers, in particular those of the so-called bohemian Left Bank expatriates in Paris. If you haven’t explored that time or its artists, I encourage you to do so. It would be pure folly for me to try and do it for you here because for each and every artist/writer/poet, there’s a fascinating history.

In Episode 24, I mention Phillip Herring’s book The Life and Work of Djuna Barnes. That book has been in my personal library since 1997. It’s an excellent book and what really got me interested in Djuna Barnes’ life and work (perfect title).
