A Reading of Mackenna on the Edge — Episode 30 The Djuna Shellam Podcast

In this week’s episode of The Djuna Shellam Podcast, I give a reading of Mackenna on the Edge, my 2nd novel, and the second installment of The Em Suite Series.

I also talk a bit about 9/11 as this is the 20th year of that infamous event. It was an event that changed the American world as we knew it. How could it be that the freest nation on earth was brutally attacked and in the aftermath became less free? In twenty years since that day, more and more questions arise, while there are fewer and fewer rational answers. In my opinion, 9/11 would make a terrible novel because novels, as we know, at least good ones, have to make sense.

Alas, we are where we are today with yet another event (that refuses to go away) with so many unanswered questions. Yet another novel I wouldn’t bother to read because it wouldn’t make any sense.

Coincidentally, Mackenna on the Edge is the story about the protagonist, Mackenna, who is still dealing with an unforeseen tragedy nearly twenty years hence. Timing is everything, they say.

Mackenna Martín

Also coincidentally, Mackenna Martín is a professional writer who suffers from writer’s block. As years have passed, unresolved issues have grown in magnitude, threatening her very life. Mackenna solves problems with words and makes the decision to write her way out of her precarious mental state.

Most of the story is told in first-person where Mackenna examines her life from the beginning to try and figure out what happened to her. Meanwhile, life goes on around her. We get an intimate look at the backstory of the series namesake while getting pulled into a mystery. We also begin to see why the series is named after Em.
